I'm still unsure of Illouz's point. Having little knowledge of the history of psychology, I enjoyed the explanation about how therapeutic discourse has become so prominent in (Western) society and culture, and how it affects personal relationships. While Illouz does claim to present a descriptive analysis of therapy in mainstream culture, she at times seems to be framing it in either positive or negative terms. Writers are entitled to opinions, certainly, but I would rather them be directly stated instead of hidden and confused in a jumble of historical facts and statistics.
